Kopieringsskydd Starforce

November 16th, 2005 by mind

Subject: UFO Aftershock demo wrecked my computer, please help.

> After installing and playing UFO Aftershock demo (English version) I noticed that my CD-ROM had disappeared. I have quite good control over my computer and keep it clean from viruses and always have my drivers updated, so I find this strange. The only conclusion I can come to is that the UFO Aftershock demo somehow messed with my CD-Drivers.

> I thought uninstalling the demo would put back my computer to the state it was before but this did not seem to help either. Now, as tempted as I may have been to actually buy the game this will not happen now, but I think you at least owe me some explanation to why my cd-drives disappear when I install the demo and how I can fix this. I find the drive in bios, no problem there. The brand of the cd-rom is NEC, more specifically a “NEC_DVD_RW ND-2510A”.
>
> I have had no problems at all with my computer prior to this demo, no bluescreens, no slow behaviour, no viruses, no trojans, no hidden processes, no rootkits that I could find, correct settings in BIOS, no IRQ conflicts. I understand that probably most people having problems with their computer is due to sloppy handling and less than optimal settings but considering that I have more than 25 years of computer experience I know what I am talking about when I say I can conclude this demo is to blame with a high degree of probability.
>
> I would rather not want to have to reinstall Windows and do all related work to reinstall all other programs as well including all my programming languages and enviroments just because of this demo.
> So, any tips would be helpful.
